11th May: Excursion to Niagara Falls

On Tuesday I took the obligatory trip to the Niagara Falls with the two other German girls from Clarence Castle (Sindy and Julia), Martina and her boyfriend.

We took the bus at 11:30 and arrived at Niagara-on-the-Falls at around 13:30. We walked the 5kms to the falls and the weather was…well…. Canadian like (rainy, windy) and too cold for the season 😉 After about 30 minutes we saw the big steel bridge (the boarder to the U.S. of A.) and some kind of waterfall behind (as we should later see it was the American Falls). So we kept on walking and took some pictures on the way.

  • Canada – how it all started

Canada – how it all started

In September 2009 (before my 30th birthday), I visited New Zealand for the second time. It was only a six-week vacation, but that’s where it all started: everywhere I went, I met people who had simply left Germany behind for an adventure. They quit their jobs, put their furniture in storage, and left.
    How extreme!
Sure, I always wanted to get away.

After school: away from my home town, so I went to Hanover to study, and after graduating, away from Germany, so I spent three months in New Zealand.
But giving up a well-paid job, friends, family… wow!

    Less than a month……huaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh……….

No idea what kind of sound that last bit was… maybe something like when you’re trying to lift a piano… well, maybe more horror-like … Like when you realize that the piano you just had in your hands is now moving towards your big toe at a high speed… probably something in that direction…

  • What’s new….

    What’s new….

….so, one month from today I’m already in Canada – hopefully the weather then is better than the weather here is now: grey, rainy and temps around 10°C…. after one single day of remindeding us how spring’s supposed to be: warm, sunny with blue skies…

  • Fantastic end of a nervous day….

…I just ran 8ks and actually enjoyed it!!!!

Thanks to my boys, Matthias, Barry and the guy from the bookstore who always make me feel special 🙂 And a very special thanks to Mario who asked me this afternoon when I told him about running “Why don’t you just run an hour?” I looked at him and said “Because I already torture myself with 30 minutes”. And then I just did it. The first 8 minutes I was absolutely dying: every single muscle in both feet hurt like hell. After 10 minutes I couldn’t run anymore and I started walking for the next two minutes. Then I started running again and only stopped about 38 minutes later in absolutely fantastic shape because I got faster the longer I ran.

Tomorrow I’m going to have dinner with Petra and replace all the lost calories and on Thursday I’ll see if I can do the same miracle again 🙂

  • Short update….

    Short update….

….The flight is booked, so there is now a fixed date:

    on May, 6th 2010

    I’m headed West.

Directly from Frankfurt to Toronto, just under 3 hours flying time… if you ignore the time difference 😉

Well, apart from that, I’ve been super busy: I’ve got my visa, I’ve quit my job and given up my apartment, I’ve booked my flight, half an hour ago I became the proud owner of long-term international health insurance with Victoria, and I’m working on finding a new home for my furniture and cat.

Still more than three months to go and almost nothing left to do… man oh man… and two weeks ago I still felt like I was sinking into total chaos. That’s how quickly things can change.

Next weekend I’ll probably try out the “couchsurfing” project for the first time, and then nothing can really go wrong 🙂
