New Zealand 2004

2004 was well before my blogging days, so I’m just writing a little summary from what I remember and add my photo memories down below.

In September 2004 – right after I finished my studies of “Documentation in Biosciences” – I treated myself to my first big (almost solo-) trip to the other end of the world.
I travelled there on a working holiday visa but naturally the traveling part was a lot more in focus than working 🙂

During the whole three months, I worked only three weeks in the vineyards around Blenheim.
Additionally, Michaela – whom I met online in search for a travel buddy – and I visited James on Waiheke island where we helped to tend to his garden in exchange for food and accommodation, excursions around the island.

The North island

Soon afterwards, Michaela and I split up and I travelled around the North island on long-distance busses. I went up to Cape Reinga where the Tasmanian Sea and the Pacific meet. And afterwards down along the West Coast, across the 90-mile Beach and through rainforest areas with huge Kaori trees, back to Auckland.

From there I went right through the middle of the North island, via Hamilton, Rotorua (with sulfur lakes and geysers) and Taupo with its stunning river until I reached the windy capital of New Zealand: Wellington.
There I took a ferry to the South island and the even nicer part (in my opinion) of my journey began.

The South island

I had met Martin, a guy from Switzerland, in one of the hostels and he offered me a shared ride in his rental car around the South island. So we spend the next weeks together and I visited a lot of places I couldn’t have seen otherwise 🙂

We drove down from Picton, via Christchurch (probably my most favorite city in the world), lake Tekapo, Oamaru down to Dunedin and Invercagill.
Then we visited brieflly the adventure city of Queenstown and the much quieter historic goldmining town Arrowtown near-by before we went up along the West coast: via Hokitika, Punakaiki with its famous pancake rocks, the Golden Bay and Collingwood with the most beautiful beaches back to Nelson with the actual Center of New Zealand.

Working in the vineyards

After almost two months of travelling it was time for some work :).
In Blenheim, I started to take over cleaning tasks at the hostel I was staying in, in exchange for accomodation. And a little later, I found a contractor who provided workers for several vineyards in the area and who hired me.

Since it was spring time, there was lots of pruning and twining work to be done.
There was a lot to learn and I liked to work outside the whole day in all weather conditions. Some of the tasks are pretty repetitive and so the work becomes almost meditative.
The highlight though when I qualified for working one day for Hunters, one of the biggest wine-companies in the area. That was pretty awesome 🙂

At the hostel, I was staying in a bungalow which was reserved for workers. So we were a nice little community with everybody being out at work during the day and meeting up in the evening, either in the kitchen or the backyard.

Altogether the time in Blenheim was absolutely amazing.

The Way back

At the beginning of December, I left Blenheim and first went to Kaikoura, hoping to get on a whale-watching tour on short notice. But unfortunately, on that day, it rained the whole day and was also terribly windy, so all the tours were cancelled.

I travelled further on, to Christchurch again.
There I spend some nice days again before I flew to Auckland and from there back to Frankfurt, Germany.

My résumé of the trip

Back then I was actually disappointed (I don’t know what I expected) because, I thought all the beautiful landscapes could also be found within Europe, just within a smaller area.

Looking back now, some 20 years later, I’m not so sure about that. Alone those beautiful beaches, the rain forests and the impressing rivers, I wouldn’t know where I’d find these in Europe. So, these days I would gladly go again…if it would be just a bit closer-by 😉

Seoul

Stop-over in South Korea

Auckland

From Sep. 12th to 16th, I acclimatized in Auckland and spend most of the time with Michaela whom I met online in search for a travel buddy 🙂

Whaiheke

From 16th to 23rd September, Michaela organized a volunteering stay with James on Whaiheke island. We helped in his garden, mainly weeding, and could in exchange stay for free with meals included.

Paihia & Russell

On the 26th and 27th September we stayed in Paihia

Cape Reinga & 90 mile beach

On the 29th September we visited Cape Reinga, afterwards I took a bus Southern bound, partly on the famous 90 mile beach, an experience for itself 🙂

Opononi & Omapére

2nd October I spend in Opononi and Omapére

Rotorua

On the 05 & 06th October I stayed in Rotorua, a town in the middle of the North island with hot pools and geysers

Taupo

7th October: Taupo and the Waikato river

Wellington

11th & 12th October I spent in the windy capital of New Zealand

Picton

12th to 16th October I spent in lovely Picton.

Staying at the famous “Villa”, going for hikes, eating apple crumble and enjoying some of the best views in New Zealand

Christchurch

18th October: My first visit to my most favorite city in New Zealand – and probably in the world.

A wonderful vibrant city center with lots of street entertainers – and the beach close by. Is there anything better?

Christchurch to Oamaru via Lake Tekapo

18th October:
From Christchurch on, Martin, a guy from Switzerland, took me in his car to travel the South island. And provided the opportunity for me to see a lot more places than I would have been able to visit using public transportation.

The first stint led us to Oamaru, visiting lake Tekapo and the famous Church of the Good Shephard at its bank.

Oamaru

On 19 & 20th October, we stayed at Oamaru with it’s beautiful public gardens and a lot of animals 🙂

Only the penguin colony that’s based there we didn’t see / visit.

Dunedin

From 21st to 22nd October, we stayed in chocolate and surfer paradise Dunedin 🙂

Dunedin is also home to the steepest street in the world: Baldwin street.

Invercagill

23rd October: a short stay in Invercagill

Milford Sound

24th October: a day spent in the wintery surroundings of the Milford Sound

Queenstown & Arrowtown

25th & 26th October we spent in Queenstown respectively in Arrowtown close-by.

And no, we didn’t do any of the crazy stuff one can do in Queenstown, like bungee jumping, canyoing, etc. The craziest thing I did was running down a hill barefoot and turning one of my toes in the process. Which kept me from wearing a closed shoe on my left foot for a or two day (I spare you the pictures).

Besides that, we went to Arrowtown and one of the spots where a scene from ‘Lord of the Rings’ was shot (I’m not a fan, so I just posting picture of the valley and the information sign)

Westcoast between Queenstown and Punakaiki

From 27th until 29th October we drove up the West coast up to Punakaiki, passing Haast where we stayed at the beautiful hostel there.

Punaiki: Pancake rocks & blowholes

On 30th October we made it to Punakaiki and the pancake rocks… a really special impressing rock formation made of limestone.

Northern West coast & Golden Bay

On 30th October we made it to the Golden beaches of the Golden Bay.

Collingwood

1st of November:
We made it to Collingwood and I decided to stay a few days while Martin was heading further on. So this is where our shared journey ended and I was on my own again.

In Collingwood, I felt like I made it to paradise: so many beautiful beaches, almost no people around and the best early summer weather 🙂

Nelson & the Center of New Zealand

4th and 5th November I spent in Nelson.

There I walked up to the Center of New Zealand and visited the Sir Stanley Whitehead Park.

Blenheim

I spent more or less the month of November in Blenheim, working in the vineyards and making new friends at our hostel, the Grapevine.

Due to data protection regulations, I can show you only one part of this beautiful experience and cannot show all the wonderful people I met there.
