Water all around me: Moelln to Lauenburg (Elbe)

Download GPX track (Moelln to Buechen)

Today, I woke up pretty tired and feeling stiff. Also the weather forecast wasn’t very optimistic, so I decided to cycle a rather short route along the Old Salt Road, meaning along the Elbe-Luebeck channel to Lauenburg at the Elbe river.

I started in perfect conditions, almost no wind, the sun peeking out from under the clouds and I was cycling the first 5k high on endorphines, already planning my next adventures on the EuroVelo6 up to the Black Sea or even across Canada, the sky is the limit :-DD

But then the weather forecast started to become real: the wind picked up and after a short time being motivated to fight it, all high flying cycling dreams were suddenly gone (for now ;-)).

In contrast to yesterday, I hardly saw any cars or people, it was just me, my bike, the channel to the left – and the wind from the front. Until Buechen I was at least lucky enough to miss the big rain but then only 10k before my today’s destination, I cycled right into an intense rain shower. There was a shelter just in front of me but during the last approximately 500 meters I got pretty much soaked. When I „finally“ arrived at the shelter, the rain had almost stopped but it was nice just to get out of the wind for a few minutes.

In the shelter there was already an older couple with their grand-children waiting for the rain to stop. They are camping in the area and had also done some extensive cycling trips in the past. They gave me the tip that I should switch to the other side of the channel because there is a cycling path which is paved, at least for a bit. A very good advise after the rain.

So I switched sides. On the other side, the cycling path was not directly next to the channel all the time but the sealed surface was helping a lot, although for parts the wind felt even more extreme than before.

After another eternity, I finally arrived the relieving town sign of Lauenburg…although….a little surprise was waiting for me just shortly after….

Another huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge rain shower washed over me when I entered the old city center and there was no place to hide from it. I waited for a bit under a bridge which didn’t really protect from the rain and cycled then slowly (another town which loves their cobblestones) into the first restaurant which appeared to be open.

I relaxed a bit at „Rufers Restaurant“ with some delicious roesti and chicken but since I was soaked pretty well, I needed to get into dry cloths. While I was waiting for lunch, I checked online for hotels, bed and breakfast etc but wasn’t really successful, even the hostels are fully booked….stupid holidays…

So I went to the tourist information, just a few meters further on, and got an accommodation in two minutes time – and just across the road. Very, very happy cyclist 🙂

But also very tired cyclist. That’s why I stop writing for today and am going to relax for a bit :-).

Btw. my SportsTracker App seemed to also have stopped working before today’s destination, so don’t be surprised by the discrepancy between route and report 😉
