4 weeks before take off – letting go

My oh my, how time flies….again two weeks have passed since my last post….

The past two weeks not a lot happened due to exceptional cold weather: -10°C during the day is something we don’t experience here very often, so not a lot is happening outside.

But I managed to get my bike inspected and got new brakes.

Also after half a year of collecting things I wanted to give away in my dining area, I finally gave them to charity and cleared a lot of space with that. At first it felt really hard to let go of all these things I once bought. Sometimes I was looking forward to buying something for weeks, like my head phones, and also spent quite a lot of money on it and now I was giving everything away for free. Honstly, there was a sting in my breast because I was raised in the tradition of holding money together and not throwing it just out of the window. But  from the pragmatic side of things, the effort was just not worth it. So this was a rational – and lazy – decision 😉

Also on the next day, I was really relieved that I was able to leave all this baggage behind without all the time of taking pictures, writing a description, putting everything on ebay or Facebook and make at least three appointments for each item to get picked up. It also seems to be something like a habit to just let go of things.

I also sorted out and shredded a lot of old documents, including a lot of stuff from school, like old math exams. Going back in time, I was amazed how much stuff we learnt at school which I never ever needed for my life (or studies), stuff like complex formulas and advanced geometry,…what was all that trouble for?

On the other side, today it would be great to choose a few subjects and get the chance to go back to school and learn the topics I’m interested in. I would be really interested to get some more insights in history, biology and chemistry but on a really basic level….maybe someday in pensioneer university or something similar 😉

Since Wednesday I also know who is taking over my flat: Due to an emergency the daughter of my landlord needs a new home, so it’s kind of perfect timing that I’m moving out. Only the many (four) evenings of cleaning and showing my flat to foreign people would not have been necessary but she is taking over the flat on the 1st of April, so I’m saving the rent for April which is really, really helpful 🙂

Besides that, I only cancelled my contracts for gas and eletricity and packed the first two boxes. When I think about it, it feels like I’m probably done packing within a week or so and THAT feels amazing. I’m really becoming a fan of minimalism.
