Day 20: Dolphins, finally!!

Wednesday, 11th July 2012

After eight hours of sleep, I woke up in a great mood and full of energy. After breakfast, I went cycling for an hour. Then I took a shower and did some reading by the pool while Hamadou scrubbed my cabin.
After that, I took a trip to the forecastle. The water is even smoother than usual, and there is trash floating by that you don’t normally see between the waves.
On the other hand, there are hardly any flying fish to be seen.

Then it’s already lunchtime, and Pierre-Antoine tells me that he had a dream in German. That’s pretty crazy when you consider that we don’t talk to each other that often.
After lunch, I sit by the pool again and soak up some more sun. At some point, I notice that my arm is already turning red, so I go inside and watch “From Dusk Till Dawn.”
I spend the rest of the afternoon cooling my arms and knees, which are completely sunburned.

Unfortunately, there is no cold water, so I misuse the beer can that has been sitting in my fridge forever as a cooling pack – unfortunately with limited success.

Shortly after 6 p.m., I slowly make my way to the pool deck because the cadets said that’s where the surprise farewell party for Jean-Pierre would take place.
However, only Pasquale, Jean-Pierre, and Gaél are on deck, all still in their overalls, and nothing looks like a party. After the others have gone to take a shower, Gaél answers my question by saying that the party won’t take place until Thursday. Instead, we chat a bit and joke that with no waves, there must be dolphins around. In fact, when you see the water, smooth as glass, you automatically think that a whale or dolphin should suddenly emerge from the water somewhere. Of course, I assume that with my luck, I’ll miss everything, but what do I have Gaél for?

Suddenly he says, “Dolphins, dolphins, there!” Of course, I think he’s kidding me, but then I see them too: three, four, five dark humps emerging from the water and immediately disappearing again, reappearing and disappearing again.
Apparently, they’re busy hunting.
Too bad for us, because they’re not swimming next to the boat. Still, I have a grin on my face that only stops at my ears. Finally, I’ve seen dolphins (or at least parts of them).
And, naturally, I didn’t have the camera with me when the dolphins finally decided to pay us a visit 🙁

Then it’s time for Gaél to take a shower and for me to have an aperitif and play darts. To warm up, I play a round of 301 on my own because Jerome prefers to listen to music. By the time I’m done, Galou is there too. He skipped his shower and plays another round of 301 with me, which I surprisingly win (he plays pretty badly). Jean also stops by in the meantime, and when we’re done, it’s 7:45 p.m., which means I’m once again “forced” to eat with the crew because the officers and cadets are almost finished.

After eating two chocolate cakes at lunch (Thomás didn’t want his), I went back for seconds of the fruit salad in the evening (I went cycling in the morning, so I burned a lot of energy 😉 ).
