Best hair shampoo and conditioner in the world

– and you can even use it as in-shower-body lotion

During my no-poo experimental phase, I also came across this recipe and stick with it, since it’s working so well and it’s super simple.

Preparations

  1. Shampoo:
(1 tea spoon of bicarb soda, if your tap water is as calcareous like mine)
2-4 table spoons of rye (!!) flour
300-400 ml of warm water (~40°C)
Depending on your hair length, take more or less of flour and water. With time, you’ll also find if you like the mixture better more liquid or more solid.

First, add the bicarb soda (if you use it) to the water, add then the flour and mix everything carefully with a whisk, so that you get a smooth mixture.

    Attention:
Don’t ever use any other flour than rye flour!!! Most other flours are sticky when mixed with water and you don’t get the mixture out of your hair. I talk from experience…it was a very long afternoon.

  2. Leave-in conditioner:
You’ll need that only if you have calcareous water, otherwise you can solely use cold water to rinse your hair afterwards

1 table spoon of apple vinegar or a good white wine vinegar – or pure lemon juice
    500 ml cold water

Just pour both in a jar that can hold 500 ml. And that’s it 🙂

The Hairwash procedure

I wet my hair, then put the shampoo on my head and distribute it evenly. So that all the hair is well covered, also in all layers and behind the ears.
Then I let the mixture sit for a bit while I rinse the jug that the shampoo was in.
After 2-3 minutes, I’ll rinse the shampoo off, using a harder spurt of my shower head. This has to be done quite thoroughly, so that no pieces of the flour mixture stay in the hair. Otherwise, you’re going to spread dried pieces of „dough“ for a while 😉
When all the shampoo is rinsed out, I rinse my hair with the vinegar mixture (=conditioner), squeeze the hair a bit to get the water out and put a towel on.
And that’s it 🙂

Additional feature: „in-shower body lotion“

Usually, I wash my hair not when I’m in the shower but separately and overhead, so that I can better get to the bottom layers of my hair. It’s also easier to rinse of the shampoo overhead (at least, that’s my experience).
But if you wash your hair in the shower, you can also use the shampoo for the whole body, especially where the skin tends to be a little drier: The minerals in the rye flower make your skin super soft 🙂

Also good to know:

If your hair is used to regular shampoos, you’ll probably need to wash your hair a bit more often in the beginning, since normal shampoos are much more aggressive.
But the flour shampoo doesn’t dry out your scalp and your hair gets super shiny and healthy.

The only disadvantage

The only annoying disadvantage is:
The shampoo must always be prepared fresh.
Unfortunately, there is no possibility to prepare a bigger batch in advance and store it. If you keep the mixture, it will start to ferment or go bad.

Conclusion / recommendation

But if you have a little time, I would always recommend this shampoo over any other:
It’s (relatively) easy to use, it works, it’s cheap, it has only good effects on your hair, it’s free of (plastic) packaging and has no bad effects on the environment.
And no, up to now, also my bath tub has not been blocked by any leftovers.
