Halftime at the Christmas Village

Today is my third Saturday, two more to go.
And there have been changes. Well, not big ones but small ones.
First of all, I changed my attitude three days ago. I decided, since I wanted to keep the job until christmas and I hated it, I could also try to learn as  much as possible. Because it is really not paying enough to be exused (or compensated) by money.

So, I started to greet people. Not only the ones who do that volunteerly (about 20%) but also the other ones who come down the stairs and hide at once into the first aisle available. You just wait until they reappear and stare at them until they look up. I learnt that when you greet people it is more likely that they ask you when they look for something, they also know, there is somebody watching and I imagine that they behave better and steal less – at least I hope so. And the whole atmosphere is friendlier as well.

I also started to talk to people, not always and not long because I have other work to do, too, but sometimes, I ask if they like the shop so far or if they are looking for anything in particular, even knowing that there are still a lot of things I can’t help them with. That doesn’t make it easier but I try 🙂

And yesterday as a highlight, I asked my boss to move „the sign“.
„The sign“ was a big source of trouble because it shows the way back to the main level at the back of the store. So that the customers walk through the whole store and also don’t run into the new customers coming down from the main level.

But the sign as well as the stairs are hidden in a corner in the very back of the store. Often people didn’t even see the sign and the stairs and so I was supposed to tell everybody where the exit was.

Sometimes people just did their round and returned to the front where they came from and I was standing in the back of the shop and could watch them leave and waited for the next thundering comment from my boss why I didn’t tell people where they should go.
And of course, as soon as one couple started up the front stairs all the others followed like lemmings.
It was also not helping that my boss and his wife also use the front stairs to go up again because it is just the shortest way back to the counter but people see that and follow – of course.

Sooooooooooooooooooooo, yesterday was a pretty good day anyway – no big catastrophes on my side – so I finally asked my boss if we could move the sign just one metre (about 3 ft) further to the front, so that people see the sign earlier and actually follow it. And he actually agreed to give it a try!!!

Today’s gonna be the busiest day of the week and that’s going be the great test.
I’m so excited if this is really working 🙂
